Hammer Head shark

🦈 Family Fishing Charter in Fort Lauderdale Catches Impressive Hammerhead Shark

At Deep Sea Fishing Fort Lauderdale, every day on the water is a new adventure — and today was no exception! On this charter, we hosted a wonderful family looking for an unforgettable Fort Lauderdale deep sea fishing experience, and that’s exactly what they got when they hooked into a massive hammerhead shark just off the coast.

🎣 Caught While Anchored on a Shipwreck

This exciting catch happened while we were anchored on an artificial shipwreck — one of the many productive fishing spots off the Fort Lauderdale coast. These wrecks are a haven for large predatory fish like groupers, barracudas, and of course, sharks.

Using fresh bonita as bait, we set our lines and didn’t have to wait long. The rod bent over hard, and the reel began screaming — sure signs of a big fish. After a thrilling fight, we brought a beautiful hammerhead shark boat-side, estimated at well over 7 feet in length. A true bucket list catch!

🦈 Understanding Hammerhead Sharks – Feeding and Migration

Hammerhead sharks are fascinating apex predators. Their uniquely shaped heads, called cephalofoils, help them detect prey like stingrays, fish, and squid buried in the sand. They are especially skilled hunters, using electro-sensory pores to detect the faint electrical signals of their prey.

These sharks are also highly migratory, often traveling hundreds of miles along the Florida coastline and into the Gulf Stream. In the warmer months, hammerheads head north following bait migrations, while cooler temperatures bring them back south — making spring and fall prime seasons for shark fishing in Fort Lauderdale.

✅ 100% Catch and Release – Protecting Our Sharks

At Deep Sea Fishing Fort Lauderdale, all sharks are catch and release. We are passionate about protecting these incredible animals and educating our guests — especially kids — about their importance in our ocean ecosystem.

Before releasing this hammerhead, we made sure it was fully revived and swam off strong, back into the depths. Moments like this are not only thrilling but also teach young anglers the value of sustainable fishing practices.
