fall swordfish bite

Fort Lauderdale Daytime Swordfish Report – Fall Bite Explodes Offshore

If you’ve been waiting for the right moment to book a Fort Lauderdale swordfishing charter, now is the time. The fall daytime swordfish bite has been nothing short of phenomenal here in South Florida, and yesterday’s offshore trip delivered one of the most exciting deep-drop battles of the season aboard Deep Sea Fishing Fort Lauderdale.

Running Offshore to the Deep Swordfish Grounds

We left the dock early and made the run offshore into calm, blue water. The fall conditions have been perfect: light east wind, steady north current, clean blue Gulf Stream water pushing over the canyon edge — exactly what you want for productive daytime swordfishing in Fort Lauderdale.

Once we reached the 1,700-foot deep drop zone located southeast of Port Everglades, we set up for our first drop. This area holds some of the best broadbill swordfish grounds on the entire East Coast, and fall is famous for producing bigger fish and hotter daytime bites.

Swordfish Bait & Rigging Details

Our bait of choice was a fresh bonita belly, one of the most consistent and durable baits for targeting swordfish in deep water. We rigged it with:

  • Pink skirt for visibility and added flash

  • 11/0 VMC hook for strong penetration on big swordfish

  • Proper weight for a controlled drop in heavy current

  • Long, abrasion-resistant leader setup ideal for deep daytime swordfishing

This setup is exactly what offshore anglers search for when researching how to fish for swordfish in Fort Lauderdale or best daytime swordfish rigs — making it powerful for SEO and extremely effective on the water.

The Bite: Hours of Patience, One Explosive Moment

As with most daytime swordfish trips, patience is everything. After a few hours of deep-dropping and drifting along the ledge, we finally got the tell-tale signs of a swordfish bite: the rod tip loaded up slowly, then pulsed with heavy, unmistakable life from nearly 2,000 feet below.

Seconds later, the drag screamed, and the fight was on.

The Swordfish Fight – Jumps, Long Runs, and Pure Chaos

This fish immediately announced itself as something special. Even from the deep, it made several long, powerful runs. About halfway through the fight, the fish rocketed toward the surface, and as soon as it broke the top — it jumped clear out of the water, throwing sheets of spray and giving everyone onboard a moment they’ll never forget.

Swordfish don’t always jump during daytime battles, but when they do, it’s spectacular.

The fight lasted just over an hour, with the fish repeatedly making deep dives and then rushing back toward the surface. With careful boat handling and steady pressure on the rod, we slowly gained ground until color finally came into view.

A 200-Pound Fort Lauderdale Giant

When the broadbill surfaced beside the boat, it was massive. A true fall trophy.

We successfully boated a 200-pound swordfish, the kind of fish that makes the entire trip unforgettable. For the anglers onboard, it was a bucket-list moment and the highlight of their South Florida fishing trip.

This is exactly the size class we see during the peak fall swordfish season, and the bite continues to heat up every day.

Why Fall Is the Best Time for Swordfishing in Fort Lauderdale

This time of year consistently offers:

  • Larger average swordfish

  • Stable weather patterns

  • Clear Gulf Stream water

  • Ideal drifts and current

  • Increased daytime feeding activity

If you’re researching the best time to catch swordfish in Fort Lauderdale, fall is widely regarded as the top season.
